The State of the Union speech was preceded by desperate cries for President Obama to bring up Gun Control. New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s group Mayors Against Illegal Guns (where “illegal” = “all”) ran a full page ad in the Washington Post. MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell said he would be “disappointed” if Obama did not mention gun control. And the Brady Campaign called for it as well. And over the course of his very long speech Mr. Obama responded with … nothing. So if Mr. Obama, who has signed the most pro gun legislation to pass congress ever continues in this manner, signing new pro-gun bills from congress and making no effort to push gun control, will he have made up for past sins and get a high NRA rating? Will get get NRA support as an incumbent? Will I feel as though I have to vote for him, as my NRA contributions go to his campaign?
Well … that’s admittedly pretty doubtful. And MSNBC’s Chris Mathews made an insider’s guarantee that Mr. Obama will be making a special speech on gun control, though I’ve got a $10 bet that unless the country truly appears ready to accept such a move that . . . → Read More: Will Barack Obama get NRA support as an A rated candidate in 2012?

Amazing. Paul Helmke of the Brady Campaign is trying to tie his 2nd amendment restriction efforts to Martin Luther King day. How low can you go?
I have no idea how Mr. King would feel about gun control laws today. I know he did own firearms before he became a leader of the civil rights movement — before he rightfully determined that changing an entire society can’t be done with a .357, but requires coordinated non-violent efforrts — but that doesn’t mean today he would support firearms ownership or legal CCW. Or be against it for that matter, as gun are a matter of personal defense and defense against a tyrannical government, not a force of social change. But it doesn’t matter.
Martin Luther King was one of the great Americans of the 20th century. A great man for all of us. For African Americans and other minorities because he helped bring about change, for us whites because he helped lead us away from the ignorant beliefs we were fostering. As such, he’s just as much my hero as he is Rev. Sharpton’s or Rev. Jesse Jackson’s, though my honor of him might not be quite as personal because my family roots don’t . . . → Read More: My dream for MLK day … that people will quit using racial division to further political issues

I don’t have time today to do much in the way of an original post, but just really liked this video. I know it’s been around a bit, but if you haven’t seen it … it’s worth the time!
The bottom line is … I think it’s appropriate for government to provide a safety net, be it healthcare or whatever … but there is a big difference between a safety net and just plain redistributing wealth. Which is what we’re seeing from . . . → Read More: Reagan the prophet — just a really good video

About a year and a half ago my wife was seriously pushing me to cancel our planned driving trip to Disneyland (about 20 hours or so) because the Swine Flu (H1N1) outbreak had just been labeled a “pandemic” and people were declaring that casualties were probably going to be high as the vaccine wasn’t ready yet. I talked her into going, we had a great trip, swine flu did sweep through our family a few months later (not more than a mild cold) and now the pandemic has been declared over and health agencies are throwing away millions of unused doses of swine flue vaccine. Over a two year period the total reported death toll was about 19,000 … which seems like a lot, but is less than normal flu.
We’re not sure it was H1N1 that my wife and kids came down with, but our pediatrician said it probably was — apparently the h1n1 test is expensive and they don’t use it unless people are quite sick. In any case our kids suffered a day or so of mild fever and flu like symptoms and about 3 days out of school. But they weren’t very sick, certainly not like the cases . . . → Read More: You can put away your shovels! The flu pandemic is over! I actually haven’t read enough about the financial reform bill, now reportedly about to pass the Senate, to comment on the main content, though there are some very worried business people who seem to have good points and I give them much more credibility than this administration. But in any case, once again a bill that is supposed to help protect the economy has a social agenda as well, with a clause that will create a new bureaucracy to “promote racial and gender hiring in federal agencies.”
But the big story is … Mr. Obama seems to be able to get his big ticket items through no matter how bad things look. He doesn’t always get everything he wants – such as the mockery of universal coverage that is Obamacare – but he gets something. And now he’s gotten 2,000 pages of financial reform to sign in to law. Should we doubt he’ll get amnesty for illegal aliens (comprehensive immigration reform) or some kind of carbon taxing energy bill (by far the damaging piece of the Obama agenda)?
I realize that just as there are some conservative Democrats there are some liberal Republicans, but this administration is so far left I don’t know . . . → Read More: Obama keeps winning – financial reform bill to pass

Mr. Obama makes one point we can all agree with in this speech (video below); the economy definitely went into a ditch. I’m not sure how he manages to blame this strictly on the Republicans, since Democrats took both houses of Congress in 2006 (when the Economy was going great guns), and it didn’t fail until 1.5 years later … but if he wants to blame the Republicans, I think that works great. Because to take his metaphor a step further …
Yup … we gave the keys to the Republicans, and they abused the vehicle and ran it into a ditch. Then Mr. Obama and the Reid/Pelosi cartel put us in debt a trillion dollars for a tow truck to get it back out, but actually spent all that money on useless toys and trinkets they have wanted for years that did little to get the car moving. And with the car still stuck in the mud they proclaimed it “out of the ditch” and continued spending money wildly, borrowing every penny they could get to buy useless doo-dads that look good to some people but are ridiculously overpriced. And now they’re trying to take out the powerful internal combustion engine . . . → Read More: Obama should be careful with his metaphors

I don’t think it’s possible to get anybody other than a liberal, anti-gun judge nomination, particularly for the Supreme Court, from the current administration (no matter what they say in committee interviews) but the NRA has decided to take a stand against Kagan. I agree with everything they’re saying, but if we defeat her we’ll just get another appointee with the same stances, but who’s better at hiding them, and they’ll ultimately oppose us. And while I certainly trust the NRA to be an effective lobbying organization, I hate to see them using up too much political capital on a battle we’ll ultimately lose.
The bottom line is however much history an appointee has or doesn’t have, or what they say in interviews … you can be sure that the President knows exactly how they feel. And while Mr. Obama has chosen not to take up gun issues now that he is president, his history and positions are clear.
Update: Steve in TN had a great comment, which is below, but I’m including it here because it’s an interesting perspective I’d never considered. As many have said … the NRA is playing chess, and every move is well thought out. If Steve is . . . → Read More: The NRA on Kagan’s nomination to SCOTUS

I loved this article, also posted on holycoast.com, where John Lott makes the case that the recent sharp drop in U.S. crime is due to all the guns purchased because of the Obama presidency, and if Chicago loses the McDonald case I pray we see the same kind of drop in crime and murder there. I’m not real hopeful of that, however, as I find it almost as hard to support the belief that more guns equals less crime as the clearly disproven belief that more guns equal more crime (though from my research the first belief system does have some statistical support, while the latter has nothing for support but the clinical fear of its proponents). But in any case gun ownership is about empowerment, both political and personal, and since there are no statistics against it and plenty of anecdotal stories of lives saved … more gun ownership is definitely something we all should want to promote. And if recent world events and history tell us anything, it’s that politically the 2nd amendment and civilian gun ownership are as important now as they ever were.
The Obama administration’s relationship with gun control is odd to me. Mr. Obama promised more gun control (as . . . → Read More: President Obama and Democrats accidentally reduced the crime rate

I don’t know how respectable this source is, the (UPDATE: THE PARTICULAR SITE I FOUND THIS ON IS NOT ONE I WANT TO LINK TO, AND WHILE IT’S QUOTED ALL OVER THE NET THE VERACITY IS QUESTIONABLE — FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY ;- ), but it’s a pretty interesting read in any case. Apparently President Sarkozy was ““appalled” at Obama’s “vision” of what the World should be under his “guidance” and “amazed” at the American Presidents unwillingness to listen to either “reason” or “logic”. “
A new report circulating in the Kremlin today authored by France’s Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE) and recently “obtained” by the FSB shockingly quotes French President Nicolas Sarkozy [photo top right with Obama] as stating that President Barack Obama is “a dangerous[ly] aliéné”, which translates into his, Obama, being a “mad lunatic”, or in the American vernacular, “insane”.
According to this report, Sarkozy was “appalled” at Obama’s “vision” of what the World should be under his “guidance” and “amazed” at the American Presidents unwillingness to listen to either “reason” or “logic”. Sarkozy’s meeting where these impressions of Obama were formed took place nearly a fortnight ago at the White House in Washington D.C., and upon his leaving he “scolded” . . . → Read More: Does the whole world love Obama? My friend Stephen of Stephen Views The News (a temporarily defunct blog) makes a passionate defense of President Obama. While I respect his intelligence greatly, I also respectfully believe he is drinking the Obama Kool Aid through a fire hose. But I think his defense is representative of what I hear the Democrat apologists repeating, so hopefully he won’t mind if I fisk his recent comment on one of my posts.
President Obama inherited a war on 3 fronts, a financial system in ruins, unemployment in the toilet, personal bankruptcies burgeoning, home and commercial real estate plummeting, untenable trade deficits, a broken immigration system, and the financial and healthcare industries spending millions upon millions of dollars in opposition to protect their interests.
There’s just so much there … much of which has some truth. Let’s deal with these points one at a time.
President Obama inherited a war on 3 fronts, a financial system in ruins, unemployment in the toilet,
How did he respond to those things?
Iraq: Continued on with G.W. Bush plan (which was the right thing to do).Afghanistan: After much, much delay, ultimately surged in another 34,000 troops. Not actually sure what the 3rd front is. But I don’t see how he did anything different or . . . → Read More: The defense of President Obama — and why I don’t buy it!
